Colgate Palmolive Company (Softsoap)

Summary of Case:

Scott + Scott LLP is investigating conduct by Colgate-Palmolive Company involving the marketing and sale of Softsoap® liquid hand soaps containing triclosan (the "Products").  The Products are marketed as having benefits beyond that of ordinary soap.  The Products are no more effective at reducing infection rates than ordinary soap and water and expose users to harmful chemicals, including chloroform.  Use of the Products has been shown to pollute waterways with dioxin, large quantities of which are formed when the triclosan from the Products reacts with sunlight after being washed down the drain.  Further, widespread use of triclosan-containing products promotes the growth of antibiotic resistant superbacteria.
